We read of heroes from Borth, Clarach and Dolybont, such as Captain John Davies who, in 1906, rescued 100 Jewish victims of a pogrom in Russia. Women, such as Yvette Ellis-Clark, one of the first Wrens ever to go to sea, in 1990, and those who stayed behind in Borth over the centuries, bringing up their children alone while waiting for their menfolk, and suffering many losses in storms, wars and accidents at sea.

There are also interesting maritime origins to many of the house and cottage names in Borth, like Boston House, Surrey, Everton and Arequipa.
